Financial Aid for Foster Youth in Illinois

Tuition and Fee Waivers

On January 1, 2019 a new law was implemented which says that all youth who ever experienced foster care in Illinois can receive a tuition and fee waiver (that means it’s free!) if they go to a public, in-state college or university. The colleges are responsible by law to waive your tuition, and they may have different requirements for how you access the waiver. Typically they’ll request a letter proving that you were in foster care. You can get a letter like that from your GAL (Guardian Ad Litem) or a caseworker at your agency. It is important to know that you will need to make your college aware that you were in foster care.
